The Nature Conservancy calls the coastal wetlands “the kidneys of the coast,” and they mean that in the best possible way: The plants and marshes of the wetlands capture pollutants before they reach beaches and bays. They are also critical to the coastal food chain, support migrating bird life, and can physically protect the shoreline during storms. A key part of the design of Brooklyn Bridge Park has been the restoration of these coastal wetlands. The results are amazing, and all with that fabulous view of Manhattan! Urban conservation scientist Lauren Alleman will lead a guided tour of this fascinating resource today.
