BETTER THAN FICTION
During the golden era of New York's nightlife in the '40s and '50s, Toots Shor's namesake saloon overflowed with celebrities from Sinatra to DiMaggio. Now standing where the glamorous bar once sparkled is the Paley Center for Media, which appropriately opens its Doc Fest 08 with Toots, an entertaining tribute by Shor's granddaughter Kristi Jacobson. Tonight, Jacobson, author Gay Talese, artist LeRoy Neiman, author Perian Conerly, and critic Jeffrey Lyons discuss Shor and his starry friends and acquaintances. Doc Fest continues with the New York premiere of Johnny Cash's America on October 17 and myriad other films, each followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, throughout the month. Aspiring documentarians should note the Art of the Documentary Pitch workshop on October 25.
