Japanese film offers so much more than creepy animated childlike action heroes. There’s also the entire genre of ridiculously gory slasher movies, like those by Takashi Miike. The filmmaker broke out in the U.S. in 2001 with two “Asian Extreme” sex-and-death fests, Audition and Ichi the Killer, but this master of bloody violence has made more than 80 films (30 of them in the past decade). Sample some of his work in the series Shinjuku Outlaw: 13 From Takashi Miike, including the new samurai epic, 13 Assassins (playing March 17).
