'Blue Note Jazz Festival Presents Hiromi'
On her forthcoming album, Voice, Hiromi flaunts her funk bona fides, getting deep in the pocket with journeymen drummer Simon Phillips and bassist Anthony Jackson. With the reflexes of Keith Jarrett, the compositional acumen of Toshiko Akiyoshi, and the theatrical swagger of Jerry Lee Lewis, this otherwise demure pianist speaks 88 frenetic tongues, in turns reminiscent of "Flight of the Bumblebee" and Chick Corea's Return to Forever. Like a shy, silent woman who dances on tables when someone at the party spikes the punch, Hiromi never fails to shock when she leaps up from the piano bench and head-bangs to the groove.
