Its hard not to see Bowerbirds without hearing Cartmannot because the Raleigh, NC, trio belongs anywhere near South Park, but because their whole demeanor just screams, Hippies! Dirty, goddamn hippies! Fortunately, this is their asset, as their spare, bang-on-a-can folk-pop and high mewling (dont call it Devendra-lite or freak folk) stores half the enchantment in its sincere earthiness. The groups 2007 debut, Hymns for a Dark Horse, won them both adoration from Mountain Goats singer John Darnielle and undue press attention for their lifestyle, as they all reside rustically à la carte in a Winnebago in the forest. Mmmkay, now. With Bell, La Strada, and Lost in Trees.
