Before there was chillwave, there was chillout. As Thievery Corporation's understudies at ESL Records, Thunderball did a superb job of picking up on the finer points of the electronica trade--almost ten years later, "Scorpio Rising" still sounds wonderful, probably among your best bets to soundtracking an expensive martini night. Ditto for "Black Sands," which reads like an abstraction of the vocal and instrumental hooks Bonobo has delivered through his last decade or so, a heartfelt soliloquy split into a jigsaw puzzle. Better hope that these guys find interns of their own soon, for 2020's sake.
