BOW WOW WOW
The big news at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is that for the first time in its 138-year history, mixed breeds — formally designated “all-American dogs” by the W.K.C. — may compete as well. The mutts will be right in there with the thoroughbreds for events such as today’s First Masters Agility Championship, a skills-based competition that’s “all about brains and speed,” show chairman Tom Bradley says. The events are divided between Piers 92 and 94 and Madison Square Garden, with the Best of Show at the Garden on Tuesday night. Though the main event is packed, it’s worth fighting the crowds to see the dogs and mingle with thousands of canine lovers, especially in the benching areas, which open at six on Monday and Tuesday nights.
