Thus spake John 5:21 on Anton Newcombe’s personal MySpace page: “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” Well, that’s the crux of the matter, innit, when it comes to globetrotter Newcombe’s leadership of the Brian Jonestown Massacre? The now-infamous documentary Dig keenly illuminated the degrees to which Newcombe was compelling enough to elicit loyalty beyond reason—even as his m.o. seemed all about dismantling the remote divinity associated with rock stardom. Newcombe appeared a moving, very human being, despite attempts to paint him as monomaniacal on- and offstage. His visions continue to ensnare to the degree that the BJM are now gracing both the Music Hall and the Resort for ATP. Pack some hallucinogens, tambourines, and, well, your etheric double.
