Brighton Rock

Dir. John Boulting (1947). A key work in British cinema of its period, beautifully shot by Harry Waxman, Boulting's thriller does a good job of capturing the mood of nihilist despair and hopeless fear of Graham Greene's between-the-wars novel. Richard Attenborough delivers a superb portrait of the sadistic and cowardly seventeen-year-old Pinkie.
