BRING THE RAKAS
With the plinky “Hold You,” Gyptian topped the Jamaican Dancehall charts for two hot weeks in the summer of 2010, but New York lovers didn’t start rocking to its swooping strings until Nicki Minaj jumped on a remix, giving shout-outs to the outer boroughs and softly harmonizing with Gyptian’s hook. But back in June, well before both the changing of the season and the song’s official release, a pair of Panamanian transplants grabbed the riddim and flipped it into “Abrazame,” which was then remixed by Brooklyn DJ Uproot Andy, soundtracking dance parties well into autumn. Confusing? It won’t be when that Oakland/Panamanian duo, Los Rakas, comes to S.O.B.’s this Saturday.
