Built to Spill
Boise's Built To Spill (who rocked our Siren Fest this year) were meant for college radio. They have the disjointed guitars and heart-on-sleeve lyricism just bent enough to apply to any ambiguous relationship problem. They have the scruffy beards and an uncharismatic frontman in singer/songwriter Doug Martsch. They have the blissfully confused song titles for mix CDs, the terrible CD packaging, and the ornately geeked-out guitar solos. New record There Is No Enemy continues BTS's tradition of loping, minutely prog-rock fare such as "Good Ol' Boredom," a six minute-plus track that concludes in a staggering guitar crescendo ode to nothing.
