Carolina Chocolate Drops
To some extent, this Durham, North Carolina, trio represents the region's history as much as its music. They're one of the very last in the long lineage of African-American string bands performing songs from the Piedmont region of the state. But even when they depart from the traditional Appalachian folk to cover an r&b or ragtime tune, it sits well with most fans of old-time and bluegrass.
