Carolina Chocolate Drops+Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens
This well-schooled young trio has unpretentiously revived the nearly forgotten black jug-and-string-band music that flourished in North Carolina's Piedmont region during the '20s. Producer Joe Henry applied a simple, elegant approach to their latest, Genuine Negro Jig, which includes tracks originally recorded by Frank Blevins & the Tar Heel Rattlers, the Carolina Sunshine Trio, and Tom Waits. Local soul and gospel belter Naomi Shelton, yet another remarkable addition to the Daptone roster, knows how to wind your clock.
