Ever since mankind could hold a piece of charcoal, art has pervaded human existence. Sure, we’ve moved from bits of ash and plant pigment to touchscreens and styluses, but the intent remains the same: the creation of images that delight and inspire. This year’s annual Animation Block Party, a three-day festival hosted by Rooftop Films and BAMcinématek, continues that tradition with 94 short animated films from professionals, students, and amateurs. Four programs of shorts fill the lineup, with selections ranging from experimental to family friendly. And the experience doesn’t stop at the screenings: Saturday afternoon is dedicated to the ABP Animation and Art Trade Show (which also happens to be free and open to the public), and Sunday night features the first-ever ABP after-party, complete with food, beer, live music, a photo booth, and tons of other goodies. Though 50 bucks for the all-access pass may sound steep—just think of it as your personal contribution to the human experience.
