His keening tenor sax has long boasted a philosophical splendor thats marked everything from post-bop knottiness to transcendental prayers. Thanks to a plush tone, probing bands, and a frisky sense of adventure, hes turning almost as many heads these days as he did when he had pop cachet in the '60s. His stylistic debt to Trane, often a bugaboo for doubters, has been overshadowed by an agile incisiveness and a sense of frolic that leads his groups to unexpected regions. With pianist Jason Moran on hand, this show will be eventful.
