The new Kind of Brown works a simple premise: A string of riff tunes, a few cool vamps, lots of groove. It's radio friendly and rather effective, largely because the bassist's attack is so adamant. But five bucks says there's some bait and switch going down when the band he calls Inside Straight sets up shop this week. Saxophonist Steve Wilson employs clarity, but breeds intricacy. Pianist Peter Martin knows the bop lingo, but has thickening agents in both hands. And the boss is capable of kicking more polyrhythms than some drummers. That might give the term "drive time" a different definition.
