Circuit bending entails hacking into the electronic entrails of a keyboard, drum machine, or children’s toy to connect unrelated circuits and create odd and outrageous new sounds. The Exploding Plastic Inevitable was a series of multimedia happenings in 1966–67 that were mounted by Andy Warhol and featured light shows, dancing, and performances by the Velvet Underground, Nico, and others. Combine the two and you get what Marco Benevento calls “A Circuit Bent Piano Rock Picture Show in Exploding Color.” In other words: a free-form synesthetic hoedown featuring the wild-style keyboardist’s trio and visuals by ace video collagist Jay Cooper. The melodic fulcrum of terrific all-instrumental Led Zeppelin interpreters Bustle in Your Hedgerow, Benevento is a keyboard maximalist who oscillates brutally and beautifully between electronic and acoustic instruments.
