'Clean Feed's Annual NYC Festival'
One label, three nights, many sounds. In the large, Portuguese imprint Clean Feed proffers non-mainstream risk-takers who split the diff between swing and skronk. That breadth is on display this weekend, when eight distinct acts get arty. There's a mercurial vibe to the way saxophonist Peter Van Huffel and singer Sophie Tassignon bleed into each other, and there's a compelling ambience to the way Samuel Blaser's trombone drifts along with Todd Neufeld's guitar. The Red Trio has a powerful grasp on the abstracted lingo of piano, bass, drums, and Tetterapadequ gives jittery free-flowing improv a hot foot. Local heroes Marty Ehrlich, Tony Malaby, and Tom Rainey are on board as well.
