Elliptical, mysterious, bluesy, bold he was quite a pianist, but Hill’s Blue Notes were filled with some of jazz’s most gripping compositions as well. A cadre of his wiliest apostles gather somewhat regularly to sustain the music’s aura, and former Hill straw boss Marty Ehrlich makes sure that all subtleties are in place. Osby, Pelt, Allison, Wilson and other key interpreters have signed on this one will be done right.
