Although Wyler had made a few decent movies earlier, this is generally considered the director's break-through picture. The first of his adaptations of hit Broadway plays, it tackled the then still somewhat taboo theme of anti-Semitism, albeit cautiously. John Barrymore gives a bravura performance in the title role as the glib self-made Jewish attorney.
