Understated indie-pop legends The Feelies are making their high-profile return to active duty (after a decade and a half of dormancy) with a free July 4 Battery Park gig opening for Sonic Youth, one of the many alt-rock outfits whove been talking up the Feelies outsized influence for years. Considering the bands New Jersey roots and the intimate dimensions of their sound, though, these shows at Maxwells, the tiny Hoboken club that served as the Feelies original headquarters, might actually provide a better opportunity to get reacquainted with frontman Glenn Mercer and his mates: Its unlikely that the outfits trademark interweaving guitarsimagine a softer, more cuddly version of Televisionwill sound much more vibrant anywhere than they do here, bouncing off the walls they helped to build.
