Last month, the British band 2:54 opened for the xx at a series of exclusive London concerts, and it’s not hard to hear how they got the gig: On their just-released self-titled debut, sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow work a similarly gloomy goth-soul vibe that sounds custom-designed for late nights spent scouring exes’ Facebook pages. Tonight, 2:54 (whose name reportedly comes from a particular point in a song by the Melvins) play the second of two area shows at the outset of a North American tour. Their own choice of warm-up act? Widowspeak, the Brooklyn fuzz-roots combo known for its sweet cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.”
