Cries and Whispers
Dir. Ingmar Bergman (1972). This autumnal masterpiece, enhanced by Sven Nykvist's masterful camerawork, represents Bergman at the peak of his artistry. The narrative, a dream-like vision, unfolds in a stately mansion around 1900. Its main characters are the mansion's dying owner, her maid and two women who have come to tend to the owner during her final days. The director skilfully blends elements of nightmarish fantasy with chamber drama.
