It's touch and momentum that give an interpreter the upper hand when attempting to reflect the grace of Bach's Goldberg Variations, and it's imagination and attack that are crucial to an improviser's take on the maestro's timeless miniatures. Tepfer is a pianist with all of these talents, and his latest disc matches the classical focus of the source material with the rambunctious notions of his own instant concoctions. Beautiful bookends, no question.
