Dan Willis & Velvet Gentlemen
Erik Satie leant an eerie calm, and saxophonist Willis gives his team several opportunities to milk that gentle vibe. But for the most part his new spin through the master's nocturnes, gymnopedies, and gnossiennes is a CD that allows improvisers to gussy-up a string of lovely melodies. Accordions prance, guitars swirl, and John Hollenbeck's lithe percussion wafts a breeze though all the action, even the bittersweet ditty that Blood, Sweat & Tears once took a stab at.
