DANCE FOR YOUR RIGHTS
When the beloved Nigerian musician, composer, and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti died from complications from AIDS in 1997, one million people flooded the streets to attend his funeral. How he went from being an Afrobeat performer to one of the most popular and outspoken leaders against Nigerias oppressive military government (and an odd one at thathe once married 27 women on the same day as a protest against government harassment) is the subject of Tony Awardwinning choreographer Bill T. Jones and Jim Lewiss new musical, Fela! The show, which stars Sahr Ngaujah as Fela, also features the Brooklyn-based band Antibalas playing Felas bass-heavy Afrobeat music onstage.
