With moments on his debut disc that can peel the paint from the wall, it's safe to say that the saxophonist has a fiercely declarative attack. In Jones's case, that kind of forthright approach is often tempered by a blues 'n' gospel fervor, so there's no reason to be surprised if the upcoming Big Gurl is marked by ferocious soulfulness as well. Tonight's two-set program finds Jones working in both an agile trio and a new quartet that looks downright scary: pianist Angelica Sanchez, bassist Trevor Dunn, and drummer Ches Smith are something of a dream team.
