Chances are good that in the past few years someone might have pressed a well-worn book by Emily St. John Mandel into your hand and said something like: “My friend loved this. I loved this. You’ll love this.” And you did. Brooklyn-based Mandel, author of Last Night in Montreal and The Singer’s Gun, is a terrific storyteller whose energetic prose easily transports the reader to another time and place. Her latest book is The Lola Quartet, a literary thriller that follows a failed journalist in New York whose mistakes lead him back to his hometown. For tonight’s reading at WORD, she has enlisted guitarist Tzvi Skolnik to provide the mood music.
