David Weiss Sextet
They use a hammerhead attack to twist hard bop DNA into remarkable hybrids, and the focus that invariably arises on the stand helps power the fierceness that has become their signature sound. From drummer EJ Strickland's uproar to the leader's clarion trumpet, there's always some ass-kicking in the air. But taking a cue or three from Wayne Shorter, they also have a way of smoothing things out in an oddly idiosyncratic manner.
