DAZED & CONFUSED
On the heels of a string of Gen-X films (Slacker, Singles, Reality Bites), 25-year-old first-time director Noah Baumbach (Greenberg) tried his hand at capturing the aimlessness of his generation with Kicking and Screaming. His 1995 indie-film debut stars Josh Hamilton as Grover, a recent college graduate whose girlfriend (Olivia d’Abo) has just announced that she’s going abroad for a fellowship. (She assures him “everything will be the same, except I’ll be in Prague.”) His friends, who might be more confused about life than he is, offer little support. The cast includes Eric Stoltz as a 10th-year college student, Elliott Gould as Grover’s aloof dad, and Parker Posey as a young woman fed up with her childish boyfriend. Tonight, Chuck Klosterman discusses the film with Baumbach, cast members Chris Eigeman and Carlos Jacott, and co-writer Oliver Berkman.
