(Youssef Chahine, 1997). An astonishingly bold and kitschy political manifesto, part swashbuckling biopic, part pop musical, Destiny is set in the multicultural Europe of 12th century Andalusia, pitting an alliance of intellectuals, entertainers, and free spiritsled by the Muslim philosopher Averroesagainst the forces of fanatical religious fundamentalism. The movie is filled with spirited production numbers and even the zealots perform a mass prayer dance on the battlements.
