In this dark and clammy classic thriller Clouzot carefully establishes the solid realistic setting of a shabby provincial private school and builds suspense nicely, then dissipates it with a Grand Guignol climax that taxes credibility. Still, its a justly famous crowd-pleaser, with the great Simone Signoret in top form.
