Latin jazz's 75-year-old piano colossus audaciously titled his 1962 debut La Perfecta and, four dozen or so records later, has more than delivered on that promise. Born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican parents, Palmieri merged rhythmic virtuosity with dynamic harmonic exploration to forge a salsa style as distinctive, danceable, and forward thinking as any music around.
