Whether Icelander-with-an-Italian-name indie-pop songstress Emiliana Torrini is singing a poppy reggae song about obsessive love (the title cut from last year's enjoyable Me and Armini) or replacing first choice Icelander-with-and-Icelandic-name songstress Björk on the schmaltzy (almost Bond-esque) "Gollum's Song" from the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack, she exudes a mysterious, cautious optimism that feels too foreign to American indie. This is, of course, mostly because to practically everywhere else in the world, she's playing just plain, enjoyable pop-rock. Did we mention she co-wrote Kylie Minogue's "Slow"?
