END THE SILENCE
Earlier this year, the PEN American Center delivered a petition to the Chinese Mission to the United Nations demanding the release of more than 40 writers and journalists who are locked up in Chinese prisons for the crime of writing honestly, as PEN American Center president Francine Prose put it. Tonight, hear from the prisoners in their own words at Bringing Down the Great Firewall of China: Silenced Writers Speak on the Eve of the Olympics. American authors Prose, Edward Albee, Russell Banks, Philip Gourevitch, Rick Moody, Jessica Hagedorn, and other special guests will read statements written by top Chinese authors Ma Jian and Xiaolu Guo as well as new and previously untranslated writings by several of the jailed writers and their families.
