Enrico Rava Quintet
The Italian trumpeter considers this new ensemble his New York band, a phrase that often suggests aggression. But the lithe maneuvers on their new ECM disc suggest a blend of aesthetics; Rava's dreamy long tones curl around the rhythm section's wily animation and saxophonist Mark Turner's rich hues. It's one of the leader's most convincing programs, and the group's coordination will be obvious after several evenings on the stand.
