Despite its unimaginative title, the Winter Rite tour features a handful of metal groups who are still riding strong waves left from the impact of the mystic, hypnotic albums they put out last year. Norway's Enslaved remain black metal's most daring band, and their latest, RIITIIR, finds them blending King Crimson regalness with their signature ferocity. Arkansan doomsters Pallbearer exude heavy mist and murk, and their LP Sorrow and Extinction became the first doom-metal debut that mainstream music critics have parsed en masse since…Black Sabbath? And the female-fronted Atlanta group Royal Thunder have been getting due credit for their Zeppelin-via-Joplin witches brew since the release of their first full-length CVIM.
