Japan's Envy were in a prime position to be the new leaders of post-metal Explosions in the Dirt since Isis broke up--what with their penchant for cinematic synth swirls, 15-minute songs, and huge crescendos that build and build and explode and then build again. But they've scaled back the epic and upped the melodies for fifth album Recitation, creating a perfect balance of swoon and croon, mosh and cuddle, floorpunch and skygaze. Openers Trash Talk, however, stay firmly in the gutter and flip off the skies, thanks to their relentless, no frills, fist-banging mania. With Touche Amore, And So I Watch You from Afar.
