In his first solo exhibition, "Dark Systems," which opens tonight at Deitch Projects, New York–based artist Evan Gruzis has taken his signature use of shadow and light in his black-and-white ink paintings to new mind-blowing levels—literally (his must-see piece, Magic, features an exploding head with sunglasses on). Clearly a product of watching too much MTV in the '80s, Gruzis, who thinks of work on paper as "extremely flat sculptures," brings a textured complexity and photographic quality to each one of his subjects, whether it's a lone pair of shattered Wayfarers or ghostly figures that seem to rise right out of their frames.
