Stunningly shot by ace cinematographer Conrad Hall, this gem of skid row poetry about small-town boxing in California is beautifully acted by Stacy Keach as a has-been boxer who has rebelled against the ring but can't stay away, and Jeff Bridges as a young fighter setting out on the same doomed path.
