Father John Misty
After abandoning the drummer's stool in Fleet Foxes and mischievously transforming into his Father John Misty persona, Josh Tillman has succeeded in making SoCal rock interesting again. With the help of producer Jonathan Wilson (who plays an early set at the Merc), Father John's Fear Fun offers a noir-tinged, gimlet-eyed overview of a small, precious slice of contemporary Los Angeles. The harmonies and arrangements are vintage Laurel Canyon, though, and Tillman's voice flutters seductively just this side of tragicomedy.
