Floating Clouds

Dir. Mikio Naruse (1955). Regarded as Naruse’s masterpiece, this epic tale of deluded lovers epitomizes his deceptively artless restraint and uncanny ability to mediate between the maudlin and the mordant. The movie’s extraordinary success established Naruse as Japan’s top director of “women’s films” but his unsentimental cinema is the opposite of escapist.
