Forest of Bliss
Dir. Robert Gardner (1986). Gardner’s doc drops you off in Benares, skips the lecture, cranks the sound, and lets India (or rather an “India”) wash over you. There are no subtitles on this reality—dwelling on the senseless profusion of being in a gaudy theater of death, it recognizes itself as an ethnographic fiction.
