FRANCES ON THE ROOF

Save for the unrelenting optimism she always manages to exude, Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha is like a long-limbed self-portrait of every young New Yorker. She doesn’t really own her apartment, isn’t especially gifted as a modern dancer, and struggles with even her oldest relationships. The black-and-white film, co-written by Gerwig and Brooklyn native Noah Baumbach, harkens back to classic New York New Wave, capturing both the aimlessness and elation of impermanent city living. That said, it’s the ideal movie to see in an impermanent theater. Catch it tonight at the opening weekend of Rooftop Films. Arrive early for live music and stay afterward to hear Baumbach and Gerwig discuss the filmmaking process.
