FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Set in New York in 2018, Gary Shteyngart's new dystopian satire Super Sad True Love Story imagines a time when the hipsters have moved to Staten Island, books are called "printed, bound media artifacts," and see-through Onionskin jeans are all the rage. Sounds somewhat plausible. Shteyngart (The Russian Debutante's Handbook, Absurdistan), who The New Yorker recently named one of the best 20 writers under 40, will prepare us for our super-sad fates in greater detail when he reads at the "Word for Word" lunchtime literary series in Bryant Park. Hosting the event is Random House editor-at-large David Ebershoff, who can be seen in Shteyngart's comedic book trailer, in which the Russian-immigrant author teaches his writing students at Columbia (including James Franco) how to behave at a Paris Review party. It's supposed to be a joke, but you know he'd actually make a killing if he gave seminars on that.
