George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars
Parliament and Funkadelic were the skanky predecessors of all other funk bands to come, but their songs could still veer toward the formulaic at times: plug in the wah-wah pedal, pick a minor chord, add a nonsensical line or two about dancing (best one: "Here's a toast to the boogie/We'll funk to that") and they'll see you in five. But when those saucy bass lines and schizoid gang vocals fit together just so, they triggered all the simple pleasure centers. When they didn't work so well, they still delivered such moments as the epic guitar solo at the end of "Maggot Brain"--and for that, they'll see you in fifteen.
