Chan Marshall, the infamously unpredictable songstress behind Cat Power, never goes easy on her fans. Sometimes she puts on glorious performances full of alternately light and dark shades of tristesse (her calling card on recordings, like her recent, critically acclaimed Sun) while other times she laconically mumbles along to fan favorites. These unpredictable live performances seem to underscore the insecurity that pervades her songwriting. Usually she has a band backing her up, but tonight, she performs solo. Anything can happen, and that’s precisely why her fans keep coming back to her. With Nico Turner.
