GIRLS ON FILM
Our first encounter with a major fashion statement in film had to have been Jennifer Bealss slashed-neck graffiti-print T-shirt in Flashdanceit was so exciting, it was like wed never seen an exposed shoulder before. But fashion in film, of course, goes back farther than thatmuch, much farther. The newly renovated Museum of Moving Image is showcasing some of that work with the Fashion in Film Festival, which was founded in 2005 and is based in London. Youll see films from the 1900s through the 70s, including The Devil Is a Woman (April 16), a 1935 film starring Marlene Dietrich decked out in costume designer Travis Bantons elaborate headpieces; and the Busby Berkeleychoreographed Fashions of 1934 (April 24), starring Bette Davis. It all kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. with a program that includes underground-film pioneer Jack Smiths 1963 Normal Love, featuring costumes inspired by horror films and Maria Montez classics.
