At the foot of the Prison Ship Martyr’s monument at Fort Greene Park, you look down to see a great tiered staircase (with joggers sprinting up, down, up, down) and straight ahead for fantastic views of Manhattan cushioned between trees. There’s no better setting for today’s Fort Greene Park Summer Literary Festival, which pairs young writers (aged 6 to 18) of the New York Writers Coalition with established writers Sapphire, Vanessa Gabb, Danny Simmons, Angel Nafis, and Willie Perdomo, all hosted by journalist, editor and WFMU DJ Gaylord Fields. The literary history of the park’s surrounding neighborhoods is robust and growing, and the festival aims to capture this particular moment of its growth: complex, multifaceted, and rich as ever. Greenlight Bookstore invites the public to an afterparty at its Fulton Street home, where cake and wine await the festival’s fantastic readers and those who wish to mingle.
