'Gowanus Jazz Festival'
As a child in Helsinki, Frank Carlberg was taken with acrobats, clowns, jugglers, and the amusement park music that motivated each of 'em. The pianist's Tivoli Trio has a new self-titled disc that mashes the methodology of these circus sounds, creating a jittery program of novel melodies. Their manipulation processtwisting the tunes in all sorts of waysis a hoot. The final week of this Brooklyn fest also features Craig Taborn's trio; the wily keyb-meister has a zillion ways of messing with texture and groove, whether he's playing electric or acoustic.
